WHSB visits Bletchley Park

WHSB's 'History Days Out’ Programme of Saturday visits to sites of historical significance saw a group of over 70 pupils and staff visit Bletchley Park and The National Museum of Computing near Milton Keynes.

The National Museum of Computing houses the largest collection of functional historic computers in Europe, including a rebuilt Colossus, the world’s first electronic computer and the WITCH, the world's oldest working digital computer. The Museum enables visitors to follow the development of computing from the ultra-secret pioneering efforts of the 1940s through to the large systems and mainframes of the 1950s, 60s and 70s, and the rise of personal computing in the 1980s and beyond. Students were also able to play old fashioned computer games!
Westcliff High School for Boys’ ‘History Days Out’ educational enrichment programme of trips, with one visit per term, is open to pupils from all year groups and has proved extremely popular. The first trip in December 2018 was to the Tower of London and the Summer Term trip will be to The Historic Dockyard in Chatham, Kent.

Head of Department, Ben Jeffreys said:

“Places on the History Department's 'Days Out' Programme has seen a tremendous uptake from members of our School Community. It is very pleasing to be able to offer our students the opportunity to broaden their minds by sparking an interest in these important national heritage sites.”
