WHSB Students Gain Valuable Insights at Medical Careers Morning

The annual medical careers morning hosted by Southend University Hospital, part of the Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, recently welcomed local Lower and Upper Sixth students for an engaging series of talks. Designed to offer a realistic glimpse into the medical profession, the popular event provided up to 100 local sixth-form students with valuable perspectives on the daily lives of doctors navigating various stages of their careers.

Attending again this year were Upper Sixth students from Westcliff High School for Boys who are members of the School's Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Studies (MDV) Society. The informative session featured a diverse lineup of medical professionals, ranging from Foundation Year 1 (FY1) doctors to General Practitioners (GPs) and Consultants. The speakers offered practical guidance on navigating medical school admissions, building core clinical skills, and managing the rigours of advanced training pathways required for medical and surgical specialities.

During the interactive Q&A segments, students sought advice on critical topics such as the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test), medical school interviews, overcoming setbacks, and the importance of professional reflection.

Our thanks to Southend University Hospital for offering this valuable opportunity, and to our Careers and Work-Related Learning Co-ordinator, Mr Atkinson, for facilitating the School's participation.
