Year 8: Loci and Constructions in Mathematics

Year 8 pupils are currently studying Loci and Constructions in Mathematics. A locus (pl. loci) is a set of points which satisfy a set of rules. Pupils were given string, rulers and chalk to design and construct solutions to problems involving loci such as "Some ants want to have a Sports Day but they have no running track. You have been hired to draw the racetrack which has 5 lanes and each track is 40cm wide with a 70cm straightaway".

Pupils were thoroughly engaged with their problem solving and devised some very creative solutions to the problems, including making a pair of compasses using string and chalk, some certainly more effective than others!
